| Long write-up: |
Rosetree consists of Amy Shapiro (fiddle & nyckelharpa) and allen lutins (guitar). The duo brings a breadth of folk music styles to the contra dance floor. Amy, well-known to the Binghamton region folk scene, plays violin and nyckelharpa (or "keyed fiddle"), a formerly obscure Swedish instrument that is gaining prominence on the Scandinavian folk music scene. This haunting instrument, with its series of sympathetic understrings (which gives it a sitar-like resonance), is a member of the hurdy-gurdy family, and dates back to Medieval times. Amy started out playing classical violin and viola, coming to folk music later in life, and has been studying Scandinavian and European music at folk workshops in Germany over the past few years. Allen is a multi-instrumentalist/ethnomusicologist, best known as a clarinetist with several Ithaca-based klezmer ensembles. He performs regularly with several local ensembles, including the Playford Gang and the Bardo Brothers. His primary instruments are clarinet, Irish whistles and guitar; he dabbles in Turkish saz and various percussion instruments, and received two years of training in Hindustani music on the sitar. Allen is also a director at the Cranberry Coffeehouse, Binghamton NY's premiere live folk music venue. With Rosetree (and formerly with Wild Rose and the Thorns), Amy Shapiro and allen lutins have played scores of contra dances throughout New York and Pennsylvania. Their duo performances feature European folk music (especially Celtic, Eastern European and Scandinavian), as well as Old Time, Bluegrass and other ‘Americana’ classics. Their schedule is posted to the Rosetree website at rosetreemusic.com. |
